“How Do I Know If My Kindergarten Child Needs Help?” – A Guide to Early Identification for Parents and Educators.

You don’t need to look for big problems! You need to notice patterns over time.

If the child shows several of these signs consistently then you must ACT EARLY.
  • Difficulty recognising or understanding basic shapes or alphabets and or numbers.
  • Frequently forgetting alphabets or letter sounds that were already taught
  • Confusion between similar letters or shapes (b/d, p/q, circle/oval)
  • Difficulty copying shapes, tracing, colouring, or writing
  • Poor or uncomfortable pencil grip (grip not developed)
  • Avoidance of writing, drawing, or worksheet activities
  • Needs repeated instructions for simple classroom tasks
  • Very short attention span for age-appropriate activities
  • Takes much longer than other classmates to complete simple tasks
  • Becomes easily frustrated, tearful, or upset during learning
  • Difficulty remembering rhymes, days of the week, or sequences
  • Reluctance to go to school resulting in stressful mornings

These signs do NOT mean your child is weak or slow. Kindergarten is a foundation stage, not a testing stage. Children need support that is:

  • One-on-one
  • Personalised
  • Gentle
  • Play-based
  • Patient and nurturing.

Seeking help early does not label a child—it strengthens them.

Timely kindergarten support results in:

  • Preventing future learning failures
  • Greater confidence and independent learning
  • Enjoying school (removing association of stress with studies)
  • Becoming independent learners

A little support now can make a big difference later.
