Case Study – Building Confidence in a First-Generation English Learner

Nimmi (name changed) came to us as a first-generation learner of English. She struggled to form even basic sentences and often remained silent in class because she did not know how to express herself. Her parents were worried because they were unable to support her at home, and the school reported spelling errors, incomplete answers, and very low confidence in writing.

More than the academic struggle, what stood out most was her lack of confidence and motivation — she believed she “couldn’t” learn English.

Laying the Foundation – Listening Before Speaking

Instead of beginning with writing or memorisation, we built her understanding step by step through:

  • Listening activities to familiarise her with everyday English
  • Simple picture-based communication
  • Retelling of short stories
  • Reading support to fill early skill gaps

We soon discovered that her comprehension in her mother tongue was excellent, which became her biggest strength and entry point into learning.

Bilingual Bridge to English

Using bilingual methods, we helped her understand meaning first, and then helped her shift gradually into English. Once words started making sense, spelling and writing became easier too — because they were rooted in understanding, not rote learning.

Building fluency and confidence

She was immersed in daily language activities, where:

  • New words were introduced and used in real context
  • Vocabulary was reinforced through play and speaking practice
  • She spoke in small, safe peer groups
  • Encouragement replaced fear of mistakes

Slowly, she began to speak, participate, and feel seen. Her confidence returned before her fluency — and once the confidence was back, fluency followed naturally.

The Outcome

Today, she performs extremely well in academics and participates confidently in class discussions. What once felt like a barrier has now become a strength. She is proud of her growth — and so are we.

Her journey shows that:

When children are taught through understanding, not fear, language becomes a bridge instead of a wall.
