When Ryan(name changed), a kindergarten child first came to Buzzing Bees – The Learning Hive, he found it difficult to express himself and often showed frustration through hitting and physical reactions. Communication was limited, and fine motor skills such as holding a pencil were a big challenge for him.
Step-by-step support and interventions
To help him manage his emotions safely, he was first given a soft inflatable punching bag as an outlet for his energy and frustration — a safe alternative that helped reduce hitting others.
His fine motor development was supported gradually:

- We started with the sock method to help him grip and stabilise his fingers.
- Since writing within lines was difficult, we began by placing ice-cream sticks as physical boundaries so he could understand where to stop.
- Later, we moved to coloured paper strips as visual boundaries.
- Over time, as his control improved, these supports were slowly faded out.
Today — after consistent practice and patient guidance — he writes beautifully and independently.
Strength-based teaching
One of the most powerful turning points in his learning journey came from noticing that his visual memory was extremely strong. We used this strength to introduce reading through:
- visual cards
- picture-word association
- real-life objects
- story-based learning
As a result, he picked up early reading skills much faster than expected.
Building communication naturally
Communication was encouraged through:
- real-life conversations
- role plays
- small speaking tasks
- guided opportunities to express needs and thoughts
His confidence grew as he experienced success in small steps — and eventually, he began to communicate willingly and more meaningfully.
This child has shown remarkable growth — emotionally, socially and academically.
From hitting, hesitation and inability to communicate verbally to writing, reading and communicating — his journey is a celebration of what the right environment and the right approach can achieve.
His progress inspires us every day!
